Samsung Will Launch UFS 3.0 Storage Next Year

Today Samsung has revealed that the company will release next generation storage media next year, namely UFS 3.0 storage. This has been confirmed by the head of the cellphone memory product planning company, Jay Oh, at the Qualcomm 4G / 5G Summit in Hong Kong.

UFS 3.0 storage will be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities. Micron, another memory chip maker, said that the first smartphone with 1TB of internal storage will arrive in 2021. The first 1TB module integrated for smartphones is expected to be ready at that time.

UFS 3.0 storage will allow a large increase in performance. Samsung said that there would be a surge of 2x memory bandwidth compared to UFS 2.1 which is a flash storage standard currently used in mobile devices. This will be possible while maintaining the same trace so that this memory chip will not be larger.

UFS 3.0 solutions are certainly needed because commercial 5G networks will start online next year. They will enable new services and experiences that will require faster storage solutions. It is not yet known whether Samsung will implement UFS 3.0 memory on the Galaxy S10 or not. The South Korean company is expected to launch a 5G variant separate from the Galaxy S10 so it is likely that the special model might come with UFS 3.0 storage.
